National Clinical Framework Director

I worked as part of a small team, led by the Chief Medical Officer to develop the National Clinical Framework for Wales. After successfully leading its adoption as WG policy, I led its implementation, as part of the establishment of the NHS Executive in Wales, where I was a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Establishing new National Clinical Networks, a data-to-knowledge function and ensuring Value Based Healthcare principles were embedded stystemically were key elements of this work.

Cardiff & Vale University Health Board
I became Cardiff & Vale first Chief Clinical Information Officer. In this Board-level role, I led a number of Health Board specific and also National projects and initiatives, focussing on developing a network of multi-professional clinical informaticists. I also established the clinically led governance mechanisms as part of the implementation of this strategy. As was the case with the National Clinical Framework, a Learning Health and Care System model was employed to bring together Digital and Clinical Strategies.

Clinical Director, Child Health
Cardiff & Vale University Health Board
As Clinical Director for a team of around 70 consultants, I provided the clinical leadership for the design and move into the first Children's Hospital for Wales in 2014, including a new Paediatric Critical Care Unit and 6 Operating Theatres
2003 - 2021
Consultant Paediatric Intensivist

After training in Paediatric Intensive Care at Great Ormond Street Hospital, I was appointed as a Consultant in Cardiff and Vale in 2003. One of my main areas of responsibility and interest was quality assurance metrics, particularly the use of risk-adjustment models for monitoring clinical outcomes and mortality surveillance. I was a member of PICANET, the UK and Ireland National audit group's clinical advisory group for 15 years.
